CranioSacral Therapy St Paul MN

Craniosacral therapy (also called CST) is an alternative medicine therapy used by osteopaths, massage therapist, naturopaths, and chiropractors.  A craniosacral therapy session involves the therapist placing their hands on the patient, which allows them to tune into what they call the craniosacral rhythm.

The practitioner gently works with the spine, the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia. In this way, the restrictions of nerve passages are said to be eased, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spinal cord is said to be optimized, and misaligned bones are said to be restored to their proper position.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. CST enhances the body’s natural healing processes and has been effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

  • Migraine Headaches
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Chronic Pain
  • Stress and Tension-Related Problems
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Post-Surgical Dysfunction(Scar tissue release)
  • Endometriosis / Post-Surgical C-Section(Scar tissue release)
  • Orthopedic Problems(Postural, Hip Pain, etc.)
  • Fibromyalgia and Other Connective-Tissue Disorders
  • Traumatic Injuries
  • Emotional Difficulties
  • Immune Disorders
  • Childhood Ailments Such as Colic and Learning Disabilities
  • Whiplash

How Does CranioSacral Therapy Work?

Craniosacral Therapy

The CST practitioner works with the patient to assist the body’s self-correcting mechanisms. CST works by helping the body’s natural healing mechanisms dissipate the negative effects of stress on the central nervous system. This is accomplished through utilizing a physiological body system called the craniosacral system, which maintains the environment in which the central nervous system functions. It consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord, extending from the bones of the skull, face, and mouth (which make up the cranium) down to the tailbone area (or sacrum). The role of this system in the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord is so vital that an imbalance or dysfunction in it can cause sensory, motor, and/or neurological disabilities.

It is easy to see that the craniosacral system has powerful influence over a wide variety of bodily functions.

Like the pulse of the cardiovascular system, the craniosacral system has a rhythm that can be felt throughout the body. Using a touch generally no heavier than the weight of a nickel, skilled practitioners can monitor this rhythm at key body points to pinpoint the source of an obstruction or stress. Once a source has been determined, they can assist the natural movement of the fluid and related soft tissue to help the body self-correct. This simple action is often all it takes to remove a restriction. Often times, CST may be combined with other complementary therapies to help restore the body to its optimum functioning level.

The CST practitioner essentially helps the body release restrictions – which it has been unable to overcome on its own – that inhibit the body’s normal self-correcting tendencies. Rather than deciding how these changes should be made, the therapist follows cues from the body on how to proceed. When the therapist follows this gentle approach, the method is extremely safe and effective.

Who Can Benefit From CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a preventive health measure that almost anyone can benefit from. For more pressing concerns, CST has proven especially effective on perplexing cases that have not responded well to other approaches. CST is particularly helpful to those suffering from head, neck or back pain from a work, sports, personal or auto injury or accident of any kind.

The extremely light and gentle touch makes CST a safe approach for children and even infants who have experienced early stress, including birth trauma. By releasing restrictions around the central nervous system early, you may prevent future difficulties including learning disabilities and hyperactivity.
