Carpal Tunnel: Causes, Prevention, & TreatmentIf you’ve never had carpal tunnel syndrome, it’s hard to explain just how debilitating it can be. Carpal tunnel can vary in severity but typically involves minor symptoms like burning or tingling in the fingers. As time goes on, if carpal tunnel syndrome is left untreated, it can lead to the hands and fingers feeling swollen and useless. At Caron Chiropractic Clinic, we hope your carpal tunnel symptoms never get to that point. While we offer several treatments to achieve relief of carpal tunnel syndrome, we believe that prevention is the best medicine overall.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

In order to understand prevention and worsening of symptoms, there is a degree of anatomy and physiology that is involved. Within the lower part of your arm, there is a nerve that runs from your forearm into your hand called the median nerve. Right at the bottom of the hand, there is a small passageway that’s nicknamed “The Carpal Tunnel.” In this tunnel, both the median nerve and other tendons are tightly packed within it. Because this tunnel is so narrow, if anything gets irritated around the area, the irritation immediately can cause pain, weakness and/or numbness in that hand and arm. So if we know what’s happening within the body, how exactly do we prevent it?

Preventing Carpal Tunnel

Prevent carpal tunnel syndrome can feel like an impossible task when you stop to think about it, but there are certainly things that we can do to reduce the risk of having it. Because carpal tunnel syndrome is primarily focused in on your arms and hands, any person that works with their hands for a living is immediately at risk. This includes farmers, factory line workers, mechanics, cleaners, those taking care of babies or our sick, and anyone doing frequent and/or repetitive work; basically all of us. How would we go about preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Taking enough breaks, stretching, staying hydrated, with regular chiropractic adjustments & massage therapy appointments (of course) would probably do the trick. Most of us can agree, sometimes that’s just not reality. Fortunately, through the use of ergonomics for prevention, and chiropractic treatments for relief, carpal tunnel syndrome does not have to be debilitating.
